The name and cover of the album perfectly represent this ideal in it's presentation 'The Cold Years (Of Cigarettes & Copulation)' represents the endless years of detachment from reality, countless days and nights passed with no division to tell one from the next, consistent insomnia and coffee, repressed memories, meaningless flings, sex is considered the most passionate form of connection, thrown away by infidelity, is this love or just another fuck? Substances with addictive qualities such as tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and opiates destroy the body from the inside while relieving the mind of the burden of everyday disappointment of failing others expectations and our own -- the over-aching feeling of being human trash. Emphasized through the black, brown, green and grey, the feelings of "I'm not good enough, I'll never be good enough". Are your parents happy with the wreck that you've become? Do they care? Should you? Is there anyone out there who loves you for the wreck you are? Does anyone hate you more than you loathe yourself? The vocal delivery of the album slowly dissolves and decays from melodic and harmonized to coarse and rough in the later half of the album, each half is announced by an instrumental track, the calm and ambient 'Mind Rust' and the more dark and off-setting 'Whispers In The Shadow'.
